Starting a serious drawing practice does not require buying every art supply available. A focused, professional-grade kit serves better than a sprawling collection of student-quality materials.
The Core: Graphite Pencils
A 12-pencil set spanning 6B to 4H gives you the full value range needed for realistic drawing. Start with mid-range pencils (2B, HB, 2H) for initial sketches, then build darker values with 4B and 6B, and add highlights with H and 4H.
Blending and Erasing
A kneaded eraser is essential — it lifts graphite without damaging paper and can be shaped for precision work. Paper blending stumps smooth transitions between values. Both are inexpensive and last for months.
Paper Selection
An acid-free sketch pad with heavyweight (180gsm or higher) textured paper handles multiple layers and erasing without pilling. Cold-press paper works for most drawing styles; hot-press is better for fine detail work.
Optional but Useful
Charcoal sticks for bold value studies, a fixative spray to preserve finished drawings, and a portable case to keep your kit organized. Add these as your practice develops.
